Ramsey Musallam: 3 Rules to Spark Learning
A short but compelling TED talk by Ramsey Musallam, a high school chemistry teacher who believes that teachers are essentially “cultivators of curiosity and inquiry”. In this 6.5-minute talk filmed in April 2013, Musallam focuses on students’ curiosity as the magnet that draws them to learning and to their teachers, and calls for lessons that “confuse, perplex and involve” students. He proposes three rules towards this end: (1) curiosity comes first (that teaching should involve and be guided by students’ questions), (2) embrace the mess (that trial and error should be part of everyday practice), and finally (3) practice reflection (that reflection and revision should be part of the everyday teaching practice).
